The truth behind puppy farms; Inside Out England, aired on BBC 1, 19th November
For those of you who missed the piece on puppy farming on Inside Out South on Wednesday 19th November, you can watch it again on the BBC website by clicking here
This news piece exposed a puppy farmer with a history of selling puppies in poor condition, many of which sadly died shortly after their new owners took them home. Dr Mugford was shown undercover footage of the puppy farm and gives his views on this terrible trade in the programme.
Legal Update
Dr Mugford and our other expert witnesses here at the Animal Behaviour Centre are attending court on an increasingly frequent basis. The legislation these cases relate to varies, although most commonly it is Sections 1 & 3 of the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991). Here are the current cases in which our experts are attending court:
Bruce’s fate still undetermined
Bruce, a dog seized in Northern Ireland as being of the Pit Bull type, is still awaiting the appeal on his death sentence. The case was originally heard at Bangor Magistrates Court on 27th August, where Dr Mugford gave evidence stating that Bruce was merely a friendly Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Unfortunately the Magistrates’ concluded that Bruce was of the type and ordered his destruction. However, Bruce’s owner is appealing this decision and following a brief hearing on the 12th November, the case has been listed for mention on 12th January 2009 at which time a date for the appeal will be fixed. Sadly for Bruce this means he’ll be spending more months incarcerated in kennels.
